A plate compactor usually has a base plate which vibrates to even out the ground. This type of compactor is well suited to sand and gravel. It is effective for soil which has coarse particles as the vibration causes the soil to move into a more stable formation. They are also more suitable if you are working in a confined area. Plates that move in one direction can be used to maintain asphalt or for curb edgings.
